Ambassadors of Kyrgyzstan, Austria and Foreign Minister of Qatar discuss problems of uranium tailings in Central Asia

Bishkek, Sept. 21, 2018. /Kabar/. A joint meeting of Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to the State of Qatar Nuran Niyazaliev and Ambassador of the Republic of Austria, temporary representative of the European Union in the State of Qatar Willy Kempel with Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi took place in Doha, the press service of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

During the meeting, the problems of uranium tailings in Central Asia, the environmental risks and threats they pose to the safety and well-being of the population of some countries in the region, as well as issues of reclamation of burial sites for uranium and other radioactive wastes were discussed. In this regard, Ambassador Nuran Niyazaliev noted the efforts of the Government of Kyrgyzstan to address this problem, including the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Role of the International Community in Preventing Radiation Threat in Central Asia.

Following the meeting, Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Austria as the country holding the EU Presidency jointly invited the State of Qatar to participate in the high-level event on the problem of uranium tailings in Central Asia (in New York on September 27, 2018) and the International Donor Conference (in London November 8, 2018).
