CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A wildly popular burger joint based out of Texas has been given the green light to develop a location in east Charlotte.

County records show a zoning permit was approved for 12809 Albemarle Road near Rocky River Church Road, just outside of the I-485 loop, comprising a Whataburger with a drive-thru as part of a larger development known as Clear Creek Crossing. The property was sold in 2022, according to city records.

A permit had previously been submitted for a south Charlotte location off South Blvd.

The fast-food chain already has plans to open up locations in the Triangle and nearby Spartanburg.

Whataburger officials confirmed with Queen City News the Albemarle Road location will not open until at least 2025.

The Texas chain is independent of the What-A-Burgers in Concord, Kannapolis, and Mooresville.
