Canadians want more cannabis education: Starbuds Canada uncovers exclusive findings from Canadians and Cannabis Study

Report finds Canadians want strain-specific knowledge from “budtenders”

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Starbuds Canada, one of North America’s fastest growing cannabis retailers, has released some key findings from its self-commissioned survey, Canadians and Cannabis Report. It discovered pertinent information on Canadians’ opinions on who can educate them about cannabis.

As cannabis is becoming more mainstream in the public realm, Starbuds Canada’s survey aims to better understand current and potential consumers, including their attitudes toward cannabis, their thoughts around legalization, and their insights for the future of the industry.

“We are passionate about the cannabis industry and want Canadians to view Starbuds as an educational leader,” says Dave Martyn, President, Starbuds Canada.

“Over 40 per cent of Canadians either smoke or are curious about cannabis, which is higher than most surveys have shown to date,” continues Martyn. “Cannabis consumers are clearly looking for knowledgeable retails stores that meet their expectations for a safe and reliable cannabis experience.”

Key findings from this survey, conducted by Leger, the largest Canadian-owned polling, research and strategic marketing firm, are based on a panel of 1648 Canadians who either consume cannabis or are open to consuming cannabis. The survey was completed between September 14 and 23, 2018 using Leger’s online panel with a margin of error +/-2.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Currently, retail cannabis providers, or “budtenders”, in Canada are prohibited from providing or promoting the health benefits or risks of consuming cannabis. However, Starbuds Canada discovered:

  • nearly half (44 per cent) of Canadians either consume cannabis, or are curious about trying cannabis upon legalization;

  • eight-in-ten of these Canadians agree that cannabis providers should be able to educate consumers on any benefits and/or side effects of a specific strain;

  • the vast majority of both current (84 per cent) and potential (83 per cent) cannabis consumers agree that cannabis providers should be able to educate consumers on possible health benefits and side effects (positive or negative) of different strains of cannabis;

  • seven-in-ten (74 per cent) cannabis users believe cannabis suppliers should be able to recommend strains of cannabis for specific activities including fitness, relaxation and productivity; yet, budtenders are unable to provide this information to their customers.

“When guests walk into a cannabis store for the first time, they may seek for advice on how to complement specific cannabis strains for certain activities, similar to wine and food pairing,” says Martyn. “Because we have to be cognizant to not associate cannabis strains with a recreational lifestyle, we have to use terms like “for a spark” or “to unplug”. As a result, Canadians will be left feeling like they have to navigate a secret menu that varies store to store.”

“As we get through the initial bumps of legalization, our hope is that we will be able to advise Canadians more openly about what they can expect from their cannabis use.”

Despite current laws, Starbuds Canada, still believes that educating its employees on all aspects of cannabis use is integral to providing their customers with a comprehensive and safe experience when visiting their stores.

Starbuds Canada is an advocate for ensuring cannabis legalization aligns with consumers’ needs. Starbuds Canada continues to work with the best in the industry to provide consumers with a premier experience from the moment they step into a store, including an emphasis on consumer education and product quality.
